OS Review: CachyOS
If you think standard Arch Linux is “fast” but still feel like your CPU is slouching on the job, CachyOS is here to overclock your expectations. It’s the Arch-based distro that’s obsessed with performance—not just “clean code” performance, but “compiled for your specific hardware instructions” performance. It’s the Linux equivalent of a stripped-down street racer: it looks sharp, it handles like a dream, and it’s tuned to squeeze every possible frame per second out of your silicon.
CachyOS is a relative newcomer, first appearing in 2021 from a team of German developers led by Peter Jung. It originally started as a project to develop the Cachy CPU scheduler (now evolved into the BORE scheduler) to improve desktop responsiveness. The project quickly snowballed into a full-blown distribution focused on providing an optimized x86-64-v3 and v4 experience for modern machines.
What sets CachyOS apart isn’t just that it’s Arch with an easier installer; it’s the repositories. While most distros ship generic binaries that run on a wide range of hardware, CachyOS provides packages specifically compiled with advanced optimizations (LTO, PGO, and BOLT) for newer CPUs. If your processor was made in the last five years, CachyOS will make it feel like it was made tomorrow.
OS Pros & Cons
The Good Stuff
Out-of-the-Box Speed: Custom kernels and optimized repositories make the UI feel incredibly snappy.
The Handheld Edition: Offers one of the best out-of-the-box experiences for Steam Decks and ROG Allys.
Snapper Integration: Defaults to Btrfs with automatic snapshots, giving you an “undo button” for your mistakes.
The Reality Check
Modern Only: If you’re trying to revive an old laptop from 2012, this isn’t for you—it targets modern instruction sets.
Bleeding Edge Risks: Being based on Arch and using custom kernels means you’re the first to find the bugs.
Niche Repos: Relying on Cachy-specific repos can occasionally lead to minor friction with standard Arch workflows.
